Intercultural sensitization of vocational training staff

Description
Many of the refugees currently arriving in Germany are teenagers and young adults. They need vocational qualifications in order to develop independent life prospects and successfully gain a foothold in the host society. At the same time, companies are faced with the task of opening up more to young refugees in order to recruit urgently needed junior staff. The plan was to select six difficult, possibly conflictual situations from training practice and present them on film, which would be commented on by an expert and resolved at the end, again in a film sequence.
Challenge
The aim was to create a low-threshold online service to raise awareness among vocational training staff for the interaction between training staff and trainees. The target group included in-company training staff, vocational school teachers and other professionals involved in training. The films were intended to appeal to viewers as directly as possible with the situations depicted and encourage them to reflect on their own attitudes and reactions when working with young refugees as trainers.
Solution
Each of these six action situations consisted of three sequences. These included:
- the introduction sequence: Here, the situation was presented and the possible conflict, misunderstanding or problem situation
- the analysis sequence: After the end of the introduction sequence, the viewer was directly addressed and encouraged to self-reflect by, for example, analyzing and evaluating experts. For example, experts analyze the depicted scene and evaluate it from a professional point of view
- the resolution sequence: The viewer has the opportunity to choose from three suggestions as to how the plot continues, so three variants of the resolution of a situation had to be filmed
Results
The films were made using real people, i.e. professional actors who took on the roles of trainers, teachers or customers as well as trainees. The characters had to radiate credibility and authenticity in order to be accepted by the target group, including the characteristics of age and origin. The films were not only intended to arouse viewers' interest in the subject matter, but also to encourage them to reflect on their own behavior.
