Description

Cubyn is a European fulfillment and delivery services provider that works with online retailers and provides an advanced logistics network for e-commerce companies.

Cubyn's goal was to build a leading logistics network for e-commerce companies and optimize its fulfillment capabilities. The project took place over a period of 11 months, with Andersen playing a key role in various stages of the development of the e-commerce logistics solution. This included the introduction of new features and microservice architecture, product diagnostics and troubleshooting, and requirements definition.

Challenge

Andersen's solution for Cubyn included unique tracking codes, automated item availability checks, performance analytics and extensive warehouse management capabilities. As a result, end users of Cubyn's e-commerce logistics solution are able to keep a close eye on their shipments through a single, effective platform. This allows them to optimize their logistics operations as automatic tracking updates, comprehensive insights and shipment histories are available.
• Automatic item availability checks combined with automatic fulfillment process initiatives immediately after orders are created by stores or marketplaces. The logistics solution provided is able to compile, pack and ship orders in collaboration with the most suitable logistics partner. The algorithm predicts the best possible delivery options for each destination.
• Performance analysis, which includes the number of orders placed, the number and frequency of purchases per customer, time differences between orders and deliveries and delivery costs. Therefore, the platform provides its users with a clear and easy-to-understand overview of their spend and allows them to forecast their future costs.

Solution

1. Website speed and performance improvement 

The site had thousands of products and different coupon and discount options. The checkout page had complex logic with coupons and discounts, which applied differently to each item. Also, the system had to make calculations according to a limit to the products in the shopping cart. All this affected the site speed.  

We optimized and improved the functionality of the checkout page. We optimized both the backend code (using PHP and Drupal) and the database. Additionally, we improved the overall website performance to handle a large influx of users. 

2. International expansion

The client expanded their business to Norway, so we created a new language version for their website. We added a new currency and integrated it with the CRM system. We synchronized their products with the new system and converted the prices from the Swedish króna to the Norwegian krone.

We wrote a function that automatically converted the prices on the site due to the current exchange rate. We also integrated the Norwegian payment system and added new functionality.

3. Warehouse checking

We integrated the warehouse system, which allowed checking the availability of goods in several warehouses, and developed and integrated a functional module for delivery.

4. Invoice generation

We set up the generation of invoices through the admin panel using the CRM data. We also designed, tested, and implemented a Restful API, allowing the retrieval of product and order information.

5. Knapsack problem

Items from one order are often stored in different warehouses and must be sent separately. We implemented a service with a built-in algorithm and API to optimize the process. All that is needed is to send a request with the order information: the number and sizes of goods, the warehouses' addresses, and available packages. API calculates how to send the order most optimally.

Results

1. We improved overall site performance due to the optimization of backend code and databases.
2. Our developers created a new country-specific site version. We added price conversion to local currency and integrated the local payment systems.
3. We have optimized the operation of the checkout page, particularly the shopping cart loading speed and calculation of all possible bonuses, discounts, and coupons.
4. We implemented integration with the warehouse system. It allows our client to track the number of goods and their availability. We also integrated the warehouse system into a functional module for delivery. 
5. We developed the Restful API. It allows site visitors to receive information about products and create orders.
6. We have optimized the process of sending orders from multiple warehouses.

How taking personalization to the next level by introducing an ML-powered recommendation engine allowed a European streaming provider to upsurge the number of their premium subscribers by a third in just six months. 

Challenge

Our customer understood that the only way to make their subscribers keep using the service is to whip up their interest by offering the content which appeals specifically to them. As quality and taste are barely the same things, one-size-fits-all recommendation services seemed useless and even harmful – a couple of mistakes are enough to lose a subscriber. That’s why it was decided to create a system that would provide users with recommendations tailored to each individual.

Solution

*instinctools team has developed a system that learns from its users. It processes users’ data, for instance, the genre of a program a user is watching and adapts recommendations to his or her contemporary viewing habits. 

An ML model identifies viewers’ preferences, using the statistics of their content consumption. It is based on particular algorithms – sets of databased instructions – that tell the service which content to offer. 

We’ve also applied a collaborative filtering mechanism to our solution. It means that each viewer fits into certain taste groups, which are identified by plenty of factors coming together (the number of views, genre peculiarities, etc.), and this influences what recommendations are displayed. If a user’s viewing patterns are similar to another user, the system will give recommendations based on the behavior of that other user as well.

Results

The problem of choosing what to watch is no longer relevant. The system that we’ve made can sustain not only users’ current interests but also the evolution of their tastes. The trick is that now the viewers can find captivating shows that they might not have initially thought of watching. As long as there’s no chance for the users to get bored they’ll hardly stop binging and cancel the subscription. Furthermore, the number of subscribers is constantly increasing as people want to pay for TV-shows and movies that ‘fit in’ their vision of great content and not waste money – not to say time – on something that doesn’t.
